Feds will fund projects for women on campus

Minister cites recent sexual assaults

Minister Ambrose on June 15, 2011.

The federal government is planning to fund projects to address violence against women on university and college campuses.

Rona Ambrose, Minister for Status of Women, told the Canadian Press that recent attacks on Canadian campuses are a reality check.

“Yes, there are good programs out there being offered by institutions like universities and colleges but we need to do more,” she said.

Women have been targeted by sexual predators at schools across the country this year. On the weekend, there were two incidents of possible sexual predators near the University of Windsor. Earlier this month, female students near Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, B.C. allege they received the date-rape drug GHB. In the spring, York University experienced two alleged sexual assaults and the murder of Qian Liu, a student from China. In April, four female McGill University students were physically assaulted.

York arms security staff with batons

Lower enrollment follows violent crimes

York University will arm its security staff with handcuffs, batons and bulletproof vests. It’s an effort to make students feel safer on campus.

One unnamed source told The Toronto Star that the move is clearly being made to fight future enrollment drops that could stem from perceptions that York is unsafe after high-profile crimes on and near the Toronto campus this year. Wallace Pidgeon, an official York spokesperson, refutes this claim.*

As of August 3, 40 fewer students had confirmed enrollment at York than had one year earlier, according to the Ontario University Application Centre. That’s a 0.6 per cent drop in a year when confirmations grew by 2.0 per cent overall.

Charges laid in York student’s death

Former student politician Brian Dickson appeared in court Thursday

A 29-year-old man has been charged in the murder of York University student Qian Liu, 23. Brian Dickson was briefly in court Thursday morning before his case was remanded until April 26. The Toronto Star reported that a publication ban had been ordered on court proceedings. Liu’s body was found in her room on Aldwinckle Heights, close to the York campus, last Friday morning at around 11:00 am. She had been speaking with her boyfriend in Beijing over the internet at around 1:00 am, when her webcam reportedly shut down. Today the boyfriend told reporters that prior to the webcam being disconnected, he witnessed a man entering Liu’s room and attempting to hug her. When Liu refused, the man evidently became aggressive. The accused is a  former McLaughlin College representative for the York Federation of Students, and a former vice-president of York’s Undergraduate Political Science Council.
