Tanker spill could wipe out Northern Gateway rewards: UBC study
Oil contamination losses could range from $90- to $300 million, study says

PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. – The financial costs of a worst-case scenario tanker spill off the north coast of British Columbia could outweigh the economic rewards of the proposed Northern Gateway pipeline for the region, says a study by the UBC Fisheries Centre.
The study funded by World Wildlife Fund Canada looked at the potential losses to commercial fisheries, tourism, aquaculture and port activities in the area in the event of a tanker accident.
Using the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill as an example, researchers calculated various scenarios, from a spill with no impact to a high-impact spill of 257,000 barrels of crude, in winter, over 52 kilometres of coastline that includes Haida Gwaii and Porcher Island, near Prince Rupert.

A fraternity shut, a prayer dropped and a mullet banned

1. The University of British Columbia chapter of Kappa Sigma has been suspended for “code of conduct violations.” What the fraternity is accused of doing hasn’t yet been made public.
2. An Australian man is speaking out after a Perth bar told him to leave because of his mullet. I reckon that’s discrimination.
3. The president of the University of Windsor has approved removing a Christian prayer from convocation ceremonies. The request came from a student club, the Windsor-Essex County Atheist Society. The prayer had referenced an “eternal God” as “the source of all goodness, discipline and knowledge.” Read more here.
4. A Montreal police officer who was already accused of excessive force for pepper-spraying protesters during a student march earlier this year is under investigation again. Stéphanie Trudeau, who wears badge 728, faces scrutiny for an incident that started with a man holding a beer on a sidewalk and ended with four charges of obstruction of justice, assault and intimidation. An accidental audio recording on someone’s phone captured the officer calling the four arrested “a bunch of red square types,” a reference to the symbol of the student protests. More here.

Justin Trudeau says Enbridge pipeline plan isn’t a good idea

The company behind a proposed pipeline to carry bitumen from Alberta’s oilsands to the port of Kitimat, B.C., must develop a better plan if it wants the project to proceed, Justin Trudeau said Wednesday.
The Liberal leadership hopeful made the comments about Enbridge Inc. to reporters following a speech to party faithful inside a packed hotel ballroom in Richmond, B.C.
While he didn’t address resource issues in his speech, Trudeau did discuss them earlier in the day in Calgary, \saying it was wrong in the past, wrong in the present and will be wrong in the future to use resources to divide Canadians.
The issue has split B.C. and Alberta’s leaders, with Premiers Christy Clark and Alison Redford acknowledging they exchanged some “frosty” words during a discussion earlier this week.
