Comedian displeased with Memorial U.

Says “havin’ a time” is his phrase, not theirs

From motionshow/YouTube

A comedian in St. John’s isn’t too happy that Memorial University is using the words “havin’ a time” on banners that promote its student reunion.

Donnie Dumphy, whose  Havin’ a Time rap appeared on the show Rick Mercer Report in 2008 told CBC that the phrase belongs to him. He also says he would have done an ad campaign “for five bucks and a half pack of smokes.”

Penny Blackwood, director of alumni affairs and development for Memorial, noted that the definition of “a time” is in the dictionary of Newfoundland English and called it coincidental.

With that it sounds like Dumphy won’t be havin’ a time on Memorial’s dime anytime soon. But there is a silver lining for him. At least his video will get a few more views. It already has 1.2 million.

Raunchy comedy stirs controversy at Western

Student filmmaker questioned by police for online teaser

Screen shot from 3 Audrey

A University of Western Ontario student and his filmmaker friend have created a raunchy comedy series—and university officials aren’t amused.

3 Audrey is a six-part scripted series named for the house where a group of fictional Western students welcome a Carleton transfer student, Tommy Noble, into their oft-partying family.

It was co-written by Western media student Dave Provost and his 21-year-old director friend Miguel Barbosa, who is not a student at the school. Barbosa is part of YEAH! Films, a collective that plans to sell product placements in YouTube based viral videos. Provost took part in order to launch his acting and writing career, he says.

Fake Queen’s University advertisement plays up sterotypes

Entertaining, if you don’t take it too seriously

Most universities get stereotyped—most unfairly.

Guelph is thought of as the cow college, even though agricultural students comprise only a tiny fraction of the student body.

The University of Victoria has a reputation for attracting laid-back hippies, even though it’s a research powerhouse that ranked second in the 21st Maclean’s University Rankings.

And Queen’s University? Well, its stereotypes are multiple… and legendary. Queen’s has a reputation for being an upper-crust, primarily-Caucasian institution where students drink to excess, have a lot of sex and think very highly of themselves.
