No more bishops please
Student council wants to repeal automatic naming of bishops as chancellor of St. FX
Student council at St. Francis Xavier University is expressing opposition to the automatic appointment of the Bishop of Antigonish as chancellor of the Nova Scotia school. Members of the council voted 14-1 this week against the practice.
The process for appointing the chancellor, the honorary head of the school, is enshrined in the university’s bylaws. Council president Sam Mason will present the student position at the upcoming board of governors meeting. The board of governors is the only body capable of repealing or amending the bylaws. Such changes require a majority vote of the members present at any annual meeting of the board. The next general meeting is Oct. 8.
A group called the Movement to Stop the Automatic Appointment of the Chancellor has been active in the university community over the past year.
“Our movement has used informal and formal internal processes to inform the administration that the relevant bylaws contravene the university’s own discrimination policy as well as the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act,” says the group’s Cam Fleming. “That the board of governors has not taken action to amend this process is a shame given the values of equality, social justice and inclusion at this university.”

Laurentian appoints first ever Chancellor
And her name is Aline Chrétien
To commemorate its 50th anniversary, Laurentian University has appointed Aline Chrétien, its first-ever Chancellor. The largely ceremonial post, that exists at most universities, has been unanimously approved by the Laurentian’s board of governors, it was announced today. Chrétien, wife of former Liberal Prime Minister, Jean Chrétien, will be responsible for conferring degrees, advising the president, and advocating for the university. That last role seems to be a perfect fit for Chrétien whose husband was in parliament for more than for four decades. “it will be Jean’s turn to assist me in my duties,” she quipped. The volunteer role carries a three-year renewable term.
Mount Mansbridge
CBC News The National anchor named new Mount Allison chancellor
My roommate joked with her friend today about how they wished they were back graduating at Mount Allison University this school year. While I’m sure the small Sackville, N.B. school has its fair share of nostalgic charm, I wasn’t sure what would cause two professionals to want to return to their alma mater.
The answer? Peter Mansbridge.
Graduating students at Mt. A will bow before Mansbridge to receive their diplomas next May, CBC News and Mount Allison reported Nov. 9.
According to a press release from the university, Mansbridge’s appointment was endorsed by the school’s Board of Regents.
Mansbridge’s duties as chancellor, as with at most Canadian universities, is to preside over convocations and act as the public face of the school.
Mt. Allison president Robert Campbell said in the release: “It will be wonderful to have a national figure with his public stature help take the University’s message of excellence to an even wider audience.”
Though Mansbridge is in the homes of Canadians across the country, it is left to be seen how he will fulfill his role of public outreach.
Mansbridge will serve as chancellor until December 2013.
Canadian universities have historically chosen established or famous chancellors. Other selections of celebrity status have included former Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson who served at Carleton University from 1969 to 1972 and Robert Borden at Queen’s University from 1924 to 1930.
