What students are wearing in Hamilton, Ont.
McMaster University’s students look like they’re too busy studying to put much effort into their outfits. Or maybe they just manage to make it look effortless. Either way, this is a school with some serious global clout, ranked 26th in the world in Clinical, Pre-Clinical and Health and 92nd overall by Times Higher Education. Photographer Jessica Darmanin captured this Campus Style gallery at the Hamilton, Ont. school while working on the 2014 Maclean’s University Rankings, out soon.
Campus Style in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick
Atlantic Canada doesn’t have a single Urban Outfitters so visitors may be surprised to see the hipster aesthetic alive and well in Wolfville, N.S. and Sackville, N.B. Unless, that is, they realize at least half of students at Acadia and Mount Allison are from out-of-province. Still, as you can see from this Campus Style gallery, many east coasters prefer comfort to conformity. Photographer Andrew Tolson shot these while working on the upcoming 2014 Maclean’s University Rankings.
Stylish students on Canada’s biggest campus
You won’t catch the University of Toronto’s most fashionable students in blue jeans. That’s not say they’re overdressed but it does take colourful leggings or slacks and to stand out from the crowd. This is, after all, Canada’s biggest campus (pop. 58,000). Photographer Jessica Darmanin spotted these sartorial standouts while shooting for the 2014 Maclean’s University Rankings, out this fall.
Campus style near the University of Alberta
Just take a five-minute stroll down Edmonton’s Whyte Avenue and you’ll surely come to the same conclusion I did: this is the go-to hangout for the University of Alberta’s most fashionable students. Simple patterns—especially stripes—are thrown in with pops of colour and classic pieces.

As the cold begins to settle in, students at the University of Ottawa are warming up to winter. Dark peacoats are returning this season on men and women with varying lengths and colourful accessories. Some matched their coats with jeans while others chose skirts for a layering effect.

Maclean’s photographers are back in Toronto, but our Campus Style blog isn’t done yet. Here’s the sartorial scoop at Carleton University, courtesy of Michel Ghanem. After clicking each of his photos, why not show us what you’re wearing? Tweet a shot to @maconcampus or email us.
As a campus style blogger for The Charlatan student newspaper this fall, I’ve witnessed a wide variety of colours, textures, prints and combinations on students rushing past to class. Carleton’s large international student population and overall cultural diversity definitely came through in these wardrobes. It will be interesting to see how we all bundle up for the harsh Ottawa winter ahead.
Our latest student style photos
When Jessica Darmanin visited the University of Toronto on the hunt for stylish students, she found navy blue, jean blue and indigo blue, with yellow and red in supporting roles. Aside from the rich primary colours, the common thread was simply how prim and proper these students all looked. Well, almost all. The woman in Angry Birds pants opted for a more casual look. Photos from our Campus Style tour
The trees at Trent University are adding much-needed pops of orange and crimson to the concrete campus, and students are doing much the same. Our Jessica Darmanin spotted pink hair, rainbow shades and red backpacks against black and brown jackets. (There was also one guy wearing plaid pyjama bottoms who was too fun to leave out.) Ryerson University in Toronto is known for its performing arts, television and fashion programs, so we weren’t surprised to find a few people with bold styles, from shabby chic (the holes in those jeans!) to the standout studs on Ives Phe’s jacket. See what students are wearing in T.O.
York University is nothing if not diverse, so we weren’t surprised by the variety of styles on campus this fall. From slouchy tops and leggings to bowler hats and knee socks, the Toronto campus is looking good. Jessica Darmanin snapped these as part of her Campus Style tour. After clicking each, why not share yours? Tweet your photo to @maconcampus or post it on our Facebook wall.
Are these students the best dressed yet?
Jessica Darmanin’s ninth Campus Style gallery is from her trip to Queen’s University in Kingston. Dare we say that these six students are the best dressed we’ve seen so far? We found a guy who made the blazer, jeans and bowtie combo work, plus a girl whose pearls, floral skirt and purple rims popped. The common thread in their threads? Confidence. After clicking on each of these photos, why not share yours? Tweet your fall fashion to @maconcampus or post it on our Facebook wall.
Campus fashion from Western University
Western University students know how to accessorize. Some keep it subtle—a scarf here, a crown of flowers there. Others aren’t afraid to wear Mustang purple from head-to-toe. Jessica Darmanin went to London, Ont. on homecoming weekend to snap these stylish students. To see what students are wearing at other universities, click here. Since she can’t make it to every campus, why not show us your fall fashion? Tweet your photo to @maconcampus or post it on our Facebook wall.
Fall fashion from the engineering mecca
The latest stop on Jessica Darmanin’s Campus Style tour was the University of Waterloo. If ever there was proof that engineers are practical people, it’s in these photos. Waterloo engineers dress even more slack than guys at Guelph with jeans, zip-ups and big backpacks (probably full of computer gear). There are, of course, exceptions, like a few psychology students. Guelph doesn’t shy away from its agriculture and veterinary school roots, so it’s no surprise that leather boots and leather jackets are in style. Unlike at some schools, it seems Guelph guys can get away with hoodies and shades. These photos are from Jessica Darmanin’s campus tour where she’s keeping one eye out for campus style. Wolfville, N.S. fashion in photos
East Coast surfer style is all over Acadia University in Wolfville, N.S. But when they’re not in Hurley tees or Billabong hoodies, they’re at least looking more relaxed than Dalhousie kids. Check out the shots Jessica Darmanin got on the final stop of her tour of Atlantic Canada where she captured campus fashion. Click each photo to make it bigger. Summers are short in Newfoundland and the sun sets early—7:00 p.m already tonight! To escape the darkness, Memorial University students are brightening things up with neon pinks, passionate reds and Batman yellow. St. John’s was Jessica Darmanin’s latest stop as she tours Atlantic Canada with an eye on campus fashion. Click the photos to make them bigger. Then show us your campus style. Dalhousie and King’s students show us their fall fashion
Photographer Jessica Darmanin is touring Atlantic Canada with an eye on campus fashion. First up, Dalhousie University and King’s College, where the kids are staying cool on student budgets. High-waisted pants are in—and one of these ladies got hers at Value Village. If you’re wondering where to buy Genevieve’s shades, don’t bother; they’re hand-me-downs from Dad. Lesson to first-years: raid your parents’ closets at Thanksgiving. Next stop: Memorial & St. Francis Xavier style.
