I read the article and was disturbed by it. Homework is important, especially in early school years in order to teach students that they are capable of learning independantly. This saves having to reteach material year after year because now, in principle, students are able to reteach themselves. Yeah, I hated having to do multiplication tables homework in grade 3, but it's much worse now when I do tutoring for both high school and first year university math students and they aren't able to mulitply. Jeez, it makes trying to handle recovering fractions (which they should know) a pain when they can't multiply quickly. The worst part is that they aren't going home and using their grade 3 flash cards, why? Because they "don't do homework", they just work on stuff in class time.
